Thamesmead can consider this match as two points dropped after missing opportunities in a well contested Boxing Day derby.

VCD took the lead with the first shot of the match on eleven minutes, after a dubiously awarded free kick was floated in to the Mead box. From the resulting melle, Jason Barton tapped the ball home from close range.

Mead then took the came to VCD, pressuring them at every opportunity.

On 24 minutes, it looked as if Danny Moore would have a good chance to equalise, only to be felled in the visitors box. The resulting penalty award was struck home powerfully by Andy Constable.

Rikki Cable came agonisingly close to giving Thamesmead the lead straight from the second half kick off. Five minutes later, Andy Constable beat James Tedder in the VCD goal to a short back pass, however his pass across the area was met be Danny Moore, whose shot on an almost open goal spun wide of the post.

Against the run of play, a quick break from Nick Hegley gave VCD the lead. His pace took him past the Mead defence to play in Leroy Huggins to stroke the ball home for the lead on 55 minutes.

Scott Mulholland’s effort for the Mead on 60 minutes skimmed the bar after an excellent four man passing move from the left wing. However, Mead would not have to wait long for the equaliser as Lea Dawson played an inch perfect ball across the area for Andy Constable to stab home from six yards.

Thamesmead’s day was summed up on eighty minutes when their hard work in midfield again resulted in a missed opportunity. A clever setpiece from Scott Mulhollands free kick saw him pass the ball to the edge of the area where constable played a quick pass to the left post for Marcus Perona to fire a shot which was well saved by an alert Tedder.

The local rivals left the pitch after facing each other in the Ryman League for the first time in the knowledge that they’ll face each other again on new years day.
