Lordswood 1 Thamesmead Town 6

Lordswood hit for six

Saturday 8 March 2008

Kent Premier Division

Lordswood 1 Thamesmead Town 6

By Mead reporter Steve Brown

On a bright but fairly windy day Thamesmead came to Lordswood hoping to win, and wanting results to go Mead's way elsewhere, to make it a really exciting finish to the season... and so it turned out!

As usual the opening ten minutes was all hustle and bustle with the ball and players rushing around with no real purpose percieved.

This changed on eleven minutes when good work from Curtis Williams on the right wing saw him get past the defender and hitting a cross through the goal mouth, where the ball met Rikki Cable to slide it in from two metres.

This seemed to settle Thamesmead somewhat and they then started to take the game to Lordswood even though the wind was against them.

The next goal came curtesey of a cross from Rikki Cable that found the head of Pedro Knight lurking around the penalty spot. Mead were well in control now and Lords only looked threatening when their number seven got the ball, but the defence were up to handling his tricks and probing passes.

In the second half Lords came out and with nothing to lose. Tthey came at Mead, in spite of the wind and had Mead under the cosh for the first ten minutes as we seemed to struggle playing with the wind behind us. After this opening to the half that only produced two wild goal attempts for Lords, the Mead midfield got control again.

On 59 minutes, Rob Tarrant's pass to Scott Mulholland, in space outside the goal area, allowed Scott time to pick his spot to make it 0-3.

As has become a bit of a habit Thamesmead, relaxed somewhat, allowing Lords possession and time on the ball. This resulted in a number of attacks that led to Coburn heading into his own net when a ball was whipped into the far post. 1-3.

Thamesmead responded to this quite well and tightened up again. Having taken control of the game again in the 70th minute Cable produced, what is now a trade mark finish, cutting in from the wing and firing into the net. for 1-4.

Six minutes later Scott Mulholland added his second with a great strike from 23 metres that flew into the net. for 1-5.

With time running out and Lords camped in their own half Brown added the sixth as he met a Cable corner. 1-6.

Hopefully Thamesmead can continue in this vein of form as they meet Greenwich Borough, one of the few teams to have beaten Mead this year, on Tuesday night.
