Kent Premier Division
Greenwich Borough 1 Thamesmead Town 2
For the final time this season, delighted Mead reporter Steve Brown, reports
Thamesmead cemented their position as League Champions on the final day of the season, to notch up their 15th League victory in a row.
Even though neither side had anything to gain from this fixture but pride, Greenwich Borough tore into Thamesmead from the kick off . Mead also had to cope with a slightly reshaped side, without regulars Coburn and Cable, so took some time to settle on a rather bumpy pitch.
Boro were in Thamesmead's faces and both sides had difficulty controlling and keeping the ball. Boro had most of the possession and had 4 or 5 players making threatening forward runs, but Mead held firm to the pressure and dispite their attacks no real chances fell their way.
After twenty minutes, Mead started to find their feet and gained some control as Boro seemed to tire in the heat. On 32 minutes a jinking run from midfielder Mulholland found him advancing into the Boro penalty area but he seemingly lost control as he reached the goal line and just collapsed. Unfortunately for Boro, one of their defenders had put in a block tackle to prevent a last gasp cross from Mulholland and the referee adjudged him to have fouled. A penalty awarded, up stepped stiker Richard Dimmock to put the ball away for the first goal.
The second half saw better football from both sides as more space appeared across the pitch. Boro's attacks were continually being broken up by Kearly and Watts in the Mead defencem with Baker and Williams making telling runs on the flanks. As Mead forced a corner on 75 minutes, a fine ball to the back post was met by Junior "he scores goals" Baker fo stretch the lead to 2-0. This did not have the desired effect of settling the game down, as Boro roused themselves and found new energy.
The game got very stretched and in Thamesmead were guilty of missing a couple of more chances until a loose ball in the 89th minute was latched onto by Greenwich Borough's Smith, who hit a lovely shot into the top right hand corner of the net for 1-2, but there would be no time to snatch a point from this final game of the season for Borough.
It was an entertaining game, with both sides trying to play attacking football, which made a great change to the defensive teams that Thamesmead had met of late, and the Mead were duly crowned Kent League Champions as the Kent League presented the team with the League trophy, to cap off an amazing season at Thamesmead Town, with the exciting prospect of Ryman League football next year.
Good luck to Boro for next season and for us in the Rymans.... Come on you MEEEAD!!
