Kent Premier Division
Thamesmead Town 2 Faversham Town 1
By Mead reporter Kevin White
Thamesmead Town will be playing Ryman League football next season after defeatingFaversham Town by two goals to one and notch up an unbeaten run of 14 league matches.
The first half was a very cagey affair, with the tension of the title race showing across the pitch with some stray passes and few opportunities created in the opening 20 minutes.Faversham were certainly not here to roll over and were battling hard.
The game calmed down and Mead began to become a little more composed. Then on 30 minutes, Faversham committed a foul deep in to their own half, however with the ball at Scott Mulhollands feet, the referee played advantage, which resulted in a swift counter attack involving five passes with Rikki Cable turning a defender to get the ball to Richard Dimmock in the middle of the Faversham area to put Mead in the drivingseat with a one goal lead.
Just four minutes later, it looked as if Junior Baker doubled Thamesmead's lead. As the crowd were celebrating, the referee disallowed the goal as he thought that Dimmock had interfered with the goalkeeper Wyatt, although there appeared to be no impedance or foul from the main stand.
Faversham continued to try and spoil the party and suceeded on 40 mnutes when Dane Luchford fired home the equalliser after a defence opening throughball from Carruthers.
Faversham almost took the lead on the stroke of half time as a run from Luchford on the left resulted in his shoot being steered past Conneally to hit the inside of the post and bounce out.
Both sides came out for the second half going forgoals, with several misses early on. Mead's best chances of a second goal came from Williams, Dimmock and Knight in the first ten minutes of the half.
Thamesmead again showed charector and It was Knight who provided the Mead lead on 64 minutes, even though he knew little of what Happened. A Rikki Cable shot on the edge of the area deflected off of a couple of players and then off of Knight's shin with powerful force to send the ball in to the net and the players and crowd in to celebration.
Faversham fought back well in what was a fairly evengame, but Mead ran out victors and were all the more pleased when news came though that the only challengers in the title race, VCD only picked up a point and the title would be coming home to Bayliss Avenue for sure. It was a time to crack open the champaign and play the ubiqitous song for the occasion, 'We are the champions.'
The only thing missing was the league trophy its self, which was a disappointment but didn't dampen the spirits of players, officials and supporters, who have all pulled together to make 2007/08 a successful, memorable and progressive season for the club.
Kent League officials will make an appearance at next Saturdays away game at Greenwich Borough to present the League Championship trophy to Thamesmead Town.
Well done to everybody. This was not just a proud day for the club, but a proud week, with the Kent Senior Trophy in the bag last Sunday, the reserves taking the Division One title and the youth team clinching the PLAAYA Cup and the Kent County Cup, making this the most successful season ever in the clubs history.
