Erith Town 0 Thamesmead Town 3

Three goals, three points as Mead cruise to victory

Saturday April 21, 2007

Erith Town 0 - Thamesmead Town 3

By reporter Kevin White

Thamesmead put on a good display at Erith, ahead of their final two games of the season against Whtstable in the league and Premier Division Cup final. Straight from the kick off, Mead were playing a very fluid passing game, supplying opportunites for the three fowards. Thomas, Williams and Cable.

Thamesmead nearly went one up on 13 minutes when a Scott Mulholland free kick from 20 years out curled over the Erith wall to go just over the bar. However, this was Mulhollands only real opportunity to provide a breakthrough for the Mead as he had to be replaced by Peter Deadman 10 minutes later due to a hamstring problem.

On 42 minutes, a tricky Rikki Cable set up an attack from midfield with a lovely lay off on the right wing to Curtis Williams. Williams surged in to the box, which resulted in an attempted clearence by the Erith defence being pounced on by Cable who used his trademark dribbling to find space to shoot low past the Erith keeper's left from the middle of the box. One nill Mead.

From the second half kick off the Mead attacked. Kearly nodded the ball down on to Sam Thomas's left foot, stiking the ball from the edge of the six yard box against foot of the left post. The rebound reached an unmarked Curtis Williams who struck hard and low in to an almost empty net to give Mead a two goal lead right at the start of the second half.

Unfortunately Mead goalkeeper Steve Northwood picked up a knock on 50 minutes but was to be replaced by talented young keeper Adam Woodward.

On 54 minutes, a lofted Peter Deadman corner was nodded feacely goalbound by James Brown. The header looked like a certain goal, but the battling Robbie Tarrent made sure of that by stretching out his right foot to give it an extra touch past the keeper.

With Erith now three goals down and becoming frustrated, a very pedantic Andy Carter began dishing out yellow cards. With backs against the wall, a couple of changes from the Erith bench saw surges forward from Miguel Cunha, which caused problems for the Mead defence on a couple of occasions. However, a solid performance from Barry Stewart and Dean Kearly snuffed out any hope of an Erith comeback.

A very confident display with three well worked goals can give Thamesmead the confidence of clinching a result at home to Whitstable in the final league game of the season next week and a possible runners-up spot if other results go Thamesmead's way.

Line-up: Northwood (Woodward 50), Stewart, Tarrent, Brown, Kearly, Stirling, Mulholland (Deadman 23), Knight, Williams (Dawson 68), Cable, Thomas.
