Cable and Williams Brace see Mead through to London Cup quarter final

Dulwich Hamlet 3 - Thamesmead Town 4

By reporter Kevin White

Thamesmead struggled against the pace of Dulwich in the opening first half, of this pulsating cup tie. However, the Mead went 1-0 up on 10 minutes when a counter attack saw Curtis Williams break free to face just the keeper, to slot home cooly. After soaking up Dulwich pressure and some sloppy defending at the back, Thamesmead fans were then sent in to raptures when another quick counter attack saw Rikki Cable slot the ball home in similar fashion to the first goal on 22 minutes. 2-0 up against the run of play, it was Dulwich who were the team stroking the ball around with an unnerving sence of calm, trying to create a come back. Dulwich's Chris Dickson achieved this on the half hour and then converted a penalty on 38 minutes to draw level. Just before the break, Dulwich were awarded a penalty after Williams appeared to go down easily in the box. The penalty was superbly saved by Danny Kemp to send the teams in level.

The 2nd half saw a more organised and pacy Mead dominate the half, helped in no small part by the arrival of Sam Thomas on to the pitch. The Mead's constant pressure paid off after Curtis Williams pounced on a blocked Thomas shot to smash the ball home from close range just 10 minutes from time. From the kick off, Dulwich pressured hard for the equaliser which came only two minutes later when a shot from the edge of the area saw Dickson secure his hatrick. Shortly after, a spectacular overhead kick from Dulwich was headed off the Mead line, but this would be their last attack of the night.

The Mead picked the game up again with possession football and fast play down either wing. resulting in Thomas hitting the post from an accute angle with only a five minutes on the clock. A minute later, Pedro Knight slipped the ball to Thomas in mifield to make another surging run in to the box, only to be bought down for a Mead penalty. Cable calmly stepped up to the spot and drilled the ball past the keepers bottom left to secure a memorable victory for Thamesmead against higher level opponents.

The Mead will now face with Welling United or Tooting and Mitcham at home in the next round.
